Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)
Sightings report image

Date: 10/29/2018

Number: 2

This juvenile male perseveres at the feeder while keeping an eye on the other hummer hovering higher above. Both feed more often on the ground-level flowering fall plants now that the kitten has a new home. ?
Typically, I gather up the twigs in the yard, rake and compost the fallen oak leaves, and spray the gardens for mosquitoes, spiders, and aphids around this time. Not anymore! There's lichen galore on the twigs, and the insects and the webs are for protein and nest-building too.
In fact, I have a ball of 100% cotton ready to hang in a sheltered space this coming February. It would be fantastic to watch the females build their nests, and if I'm lucky, it may give me an idea of where the nests might be. Hard to believe that's just four months from now!
