6 of us went with Mia Munroe as monitors in training to learn to observe and count Monarchs as they make their way through the smokey California skies. Their known winter refuge sites are changing - many are having their understories heavily cleared as fire prevention which is changing the moisture retention and overall insulative and temperature profiles of the overwintering groves. PG&E has also cleared many trees from their power lines and people are building and they are clearing the areas around their homes which is altering the groves. The ground is very dry and the butterflies are seeking moisture. They are nectaring on Ivy flowers & Tree Dahlia. We saw many puddling at Agate Beach!
