flying
It is very unusual to have them here, and in fact it is the only butterfly I have seen this winter up here. I also saw one at the end of December while doing a Christmas Bird Count ( a positive ID seen by myself and the 3 others I was with). Others have also seen them this winter ( I am not sure if they do Journey North, but will ask them). The 2 I have seen this month were both flying, and I did not have a camera with me at the time. While we have lots of milkweed on the property, I do not believe any of it is up. We have had a relatively mild winter as compared to recent winters, so I am not sure if that is a contributing factor. I will try my best to get a picture next time I see one. I feel completely sure it was not a Comma, Painted Lady, or Comma. Though the distance on the second one I saw was too far to see the pattern on the wings versus a Viceroy, they are usually not out until much later up here, and it was not in the right habitat or acting at all like a Viceroy, so I feel safe in ruling that out.
