2 male red-winged blackbirds vocalizing in the Ballona Freshwater Marsh - first sightings of the season! Did playback experiments using my Audubon Bird Guide phone app and both males returned the vocalizations and got upset! As we know the males come first to get their territories. Was so nice to hear their calls! I work at the LMU Center for Urban Resilience (CURes) and had a student group of 30 with me from Ellen Ochoa Learning Center, Cudahy, CA. First time at the Marsh for many of them. Very cool!
