Signs of Spring

Date: 03/12/2019

Number: 150

After sightings at home, hypothesized that higher concentrations would utilize the natural path offered by the Santa Ana river.

Estimated 150-200 Painted Ladies observed during 1 minute period over approx. 1 acre.

While the observable population was denser in the river bottom, most appeared to be travelling N/NW* as the river bottom takes a westerly path in the area(although a significant portion did follow the path of the river). More regional observations necessary, but the shelter offered by the river bottom does seem to channel some portion of migration.

*other sighting report I submitted today(3/12/19) erroneously described the path of travel as N/NE when it should have been N/NW
