This is a photo of a female monarch as she sips nectar from false garlic flowers (Nothoscordum bivalve). I mentioned in my 03/21/2019 Monarch Adult Sighted that the monarchs were often nectaring from wildflowers. These little false garlic flowers are the unsung heroes that provide crucial hydration and nourishment for these long-journeyed monarchs. They are abundant in this area at this time, but are sometimes mowed, because people do not know of their critical importance to bees, butterflies, and other insects. False garlic flowers provide nectar when other wildflowers are not yet available. Monarchs love them!
