Sightings report image

Number: 25

Today the temperatures were in the 60's and 70's, it was mostly cloudy, with strong gusty winds at times. In the morning we had some light rain and the humidity was high throughout the day.

The monarchs were quite abundant, seeming to be wherever one looked or suddenly sailing right past. The females were fluttering low looking for milkweed and laying eggs. Sometimes they would rest on the ground, quite hidden unless you knew they were there.

The females showed great diligence as they searched for the new fresh milkweed, now in good supply, but still needing to be discovered. Sometimes they needed to stay flying near the milkweed even as strong gusts of wind buffeted them around ~ me too. Some of them had very tattery, thin wings, but they were just that much more impressive as they tirelessly covered large areas seeking for milkweed.

The males sailed around everywhere and nectared from yellow thistles and other wildflowers. They too rested at times and were also looking for females. This is a photo of one of the male monarchs nectaring from a yellow thistle ~ a favorite nectar source in our area.
