Signs of Spring

Date: 04/11/2019

Number: 1

First Chipping Sparrow of the year arrived at my feeders late this afternoon and brought along a Field Sparrow with him. First time I have ever observed a Field Sparrow at my feeders in 25+ years of feeding! Both had their feathers puffed out against the strong cold East wind with 6°C below normal temperatures today (high 9C). Mostly cloudy.
Had my first Song Sparrow of the year here in the morning.
Also observed a male House Finch presenting his mate with a gift of seed. They are probably getting ready to make a nest soon. Temperatures were down to 1°C last night with a cold light rain but the ground is very dry and bare.
The Robins (my male now has a mate; first observed today too) were managing to find insects in the lawn today. Warming up over night with high tomorrow near 19C which will bring out more insects. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
