Signs of Spring

Date: 04/15/2019

Number: 1

Monarch spotted basking in the sun on the side of my house, the day after a snowstorm.

I am not a butterfly expert, by any means, so I doubt I can be 100% certain. After I first saw it, I questioned what it was and went back out and took another look, thinking that it seemed too early to be seeing butterflies. I feel like it looked much more like a Monarch than an Eastern Comma. Unfortunately, he flew away, and I haven’t spotted him again. We had very strong winds here yesterday along with a pretty good snow storm and it was just a awful all day long. I read where someone else had seen a Monarch in IL and the assumption was that the strong winds may have helped its arrival. I will keep my eyes out for a reappearance. It’s considerably warmer here today, so hopefully, the butterfly will have a chance to survive.
