I spotted my first Monarch of the year while paddling Blackbird Creek. It flew over me across the creek.
I work for a conservation organization as their land steward, so I am very familiar with the wildlife observed on the properties I manage. Unfortunately, I was not able to get a photograph of my sighting on Sunday, as I was kayaking and did not have a camera and my phone was zipped up in a waterproof bag. HOWEVER, this morning I was driving around a property near the first sighting and saw another monarch and WAS able to snap a couple pictures, and I feel very confident that it is a monarch. The photos are attached. It appeared to be feeding on the flowers of a black willow tree. Many trees are currently flowering in Delaware. The milkweed is has leafed out here, but I have not been able to find any monarch eggs.
The 2nd sighting on 4/23/19 was at these coordinates: 39.419766, -75.620629
Blackbird Creek, DE
Latitude: 39.4 Longitude: -75.6
