Today in North Central Texas, I toured three prairie remnants and observed faded Monarchs in all three locations in surprising numbers. I believe we saw 8 total.
They did not look new. All were nectaring, using Prairie Verbena and New Jersey Tea, and Texas Bluestars . There was little milkweed in these locations to check, but one plant of Asclepias asperula on a bald chalk slope had one second instar caterpillar.
The following day, in Callisburg, Tx, I saw a male patrolling and nectaring on a patch of Blackberry flowers.
