I saw 5 monarchs as I went out into the meadows collecting milkweed leaves for the monarch caterpillars that I am raising indoors. A cool front had blown in last evening, so at 10:30am it was 64 degrees F, partly cloudy, with 55% humidity, and winds 9mph out of the east.
The monarchs were flying, resting & sunning, and nectaring (mostly from yellow thistles). They all seemed to have faded and worn wings. As I collected leaves, I observed monarch eggs on the milkweed and all sizes of monarch larvae, including a 5th instar.
This is a photo of one of the monarchs nectaring from a yellow thistle, getting a bit of nectar and warming sunlight on a cool morning.
