Ice-Out
Sightings report image

As reported by the Burlington Free Press
"Lake Champlain froze over March 8, scientists agree, but precisely when the ice disappeared remains a mystery.

NASA satellite photographs show traces of ice lingering in the Missisquoi Bay and Inland Sea portions of the eastern lake on April 17. The next cloud-free photograph, on April 22, shows not a trace of the white stuff.

"It looks like the lake is ice-free," declared Matthew Clay, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service station in South Burlington.

But, he added, he can't be sure: Ambiguity is the norm when it comes to Lake Champlain's ice; there's little consistency in how, when and where the ice is observed."
