Sightings report image

Date: 04/17/2019

Number: 3

Today was a cloudy, overcast day, at times misty and lightly sprinkling rain. Around 5pm it was 74 degrees F, cloudy, with 89% humidity, and breezy winds from the southeast.

I went out to collect leaves for the indoor-raised monarch caterpillars. On checking the milkweed I saw plenty of eggs (many appearing quite fresh) and saw 1st, 2nd, and 3rd instars. I took note that there continue to be new milkweed plants coming up and quite a few that are flowering. We have had good rains recently and today provided more moisture as well.

I only saw a few monarchs today. This is a photo of one of them as she took shelter in our pear tree. It was just starting to spritz some light misty rain. She appears to have a missing part of her hindwing, but she seemed to fly just fine. It was lovely to have her near!
