Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Number: 2

Today, I saw a vividly bright monarch flying fast ~ definitely a newborn! He briefly hung onto some tall rye grass stems swaying in the strong breezes, then flew fast to our pear tree. That is where I followed to look at him more closely as he rested on a leaf. I was able to see he was a male, with gorgeous velvety wings. Unfortunately, I did not have my camera, because I was out collecting milkweed leaves for the indoor caterpillars, carrying my bucket and wearing my vinyl gloves. I rushed to get my camera, but he was off somewhere by the time I returned to the pear tree.

So, I went on a search for him, marching around keeping my eyes peeled, but alas he was not to be found. But ... I did find another male monarch, one with worn wings, who was sailing around and nectaring from the tall prairie plantains in an upper meadow. It was good to see him too ~ one of the elder generation still here, even as the next generation is being born.

This is a photo of the elder monarch sharing the golden nectar blossoms of a prairie plantain with a honey bee.
