Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 04/30/2019

Number: 1

Anticipation mounted as I watched reports from others of first sightings of ruby throated hummingbirds come in nearby west of my residence and other reports further north several days ago. Well my wait is over. At 5:45pm a single male ruby throated stopped at our dining room bow window feeder. He appeared a few hours in advance of a thunderstorm. The temperature at the time was 47 degrees following a daily high of only 50 degrees. The wind was blowing at about 10 mph with gusts of about 18 mph out of the east. Overnight low temperature is expected to be 46 degrees. He made three visits to this feeder and a single visit each to two other feeders we have had out. His last visit was at 6:50pm. Overnight a heavy thunderstorm passed through dumping lots of rain and gusting winds. Watched for any signs of him the following morning but didn't see him, so he may have rested in our dense evergreen hedges overnight and continued his northern migration. Unfortunately, captured photo was too grainy to post.
