I saw 3 monarchs today who were nectaring on prairie plantains and self-heal flowers. It was around 10:30am, 76 degrees F, mostly cloudy, 79% humidity, and winds 11 mph from the southwest. The grass was dewy and there was a light misty quality to the air.
The three monarchs seen near each other this morning were a newborn female with bright wings, a male with somewhat faded wings, and another male with very tattery wings. It is possible the female was from an indoor-reared group I released yesterday, who stayed here a bit longer than they usually do.
Checking the milkweed I continue to see monarch larvae at various stages of development, especially newborns through 4th instar. I only see a few monarch eggs on the milkweed now.
This is a photo of one of the male monarchs nectaring from a self-heal flower (Prunella vulgaris). These lavender flowers were his favorites this morning!
