It was a male. He was in a small pile of freshly raked leaves. He was moving the leaves around and pecking the ground. He was a few feet away from a nesting area from last year.
He was sharing the space with a female cardinal. There was also a junco in the group. I was surprised at how close they were, especially the junco, which usually gets chased away by the bigger birds.
