Both males arrived at the same time, exactly one year from their last migration north on May 3, 2018. It was late afternoon and quite chilly and overcast. Though they flew to the feeder in close formation, one male chased the other male away from the feeder while he drank.
They seemed comfortable with my spouse and I sitting in lawn chairs approximately 6 feet from the feeder, which makes me think they are the same ones from last year, as well as from previous years. We have multiple feeders around the yard, that are visible for any migrating hummingbird. The particular feeder these two males came to is a special one that is almost completely hidden under a deep roof overhang by our back bedroom. It is not visible until a bird is very close to it.
After sending the notes for my first sighting, I walked through my kitchen and happened to glance at the feeders that are hung just a few feet from the door.
There was a hummingbird feeding and much to my surprise, it was FEMALE. I thought this was very unusual for our area by Lake Ontario, as the females normally don’t arrive for another 1-1/2 weeks from the first male sighting.
