At Harrisville State Park, a Department of Natural Resource staff member (Eric) saw me birdwatching today and reported that he saw a monarch butterfly flying about Cabin 300 on April 30th. He tried to get the gender of the monarch, but it flew high into a White Pine tree next to the cabin. I looked up the weather history for that day and the temperature topped out at 60F. with the wind ENE-8 mph. It was partly sunny. The next day, we had an all day rain heavy at times measuring 1.74". This would be the earliest monarch observed for the Harrisville area since record keeping began in 2010. It broke the old record of May 02, 2017.
Editor's note: This report would need photographic proof to be placed back on the Monarch map.
