I was out hiking today from about 11am to 1pm and saw at least 12 Monarchs in the prairie. Hard to get a good picture as they were on the move searching for milkweed.
The monarchs weren't really nectaring, they would stop for a split-second and move on. I was able to count at least 6 different ones in the field at the same time. f I could have stayed longer, I probably would have seen dozens! I couldn't get too close for a good picture. They did seem to be moving towards the direction of a creek. I didn't see any milkweed, but didn't hike to far off the path.
I saw lots of Butterflies: cabbage whites, red admirals, comma or question mark, sulfurs, painted lady, mourning cloak. Heavy rains moved in and we shifted gears and became storm chasers. What a great day!
