We visited Lakeside Daisy State Nature Preserve to see the population of federally threatened Lakeside Daisy in peak bloom. I never thought to watch for monarchs until a large, fresh, bright beautiful monarch flew past my nose. I observed it for a few moments before it flew too far for me to track it with my naked wye. (You must stay on marked paths in this preserve). What a surprise! It was nectaring on the daisies, as were several American Ladies. We also saw bald eagles riding the thermals created over this sun-baked, rocky landscape. I couldn't manage to get a photo of the monarch, but here is a photo of the bright, sweet little Lakeside Daisy.
