Signs of Spring

Date: 05/20/2019

Number: 1

Female Mallard is gone. Only eggshells left. Checked yesterday shortly after noon and she was still on the nest. When we returned four hours later there was a very heavy downpour. I did not check again before nightfall. When checked this morning around 9:15 no sign. I am hoping they made it across the road safely. They picked a good day as today is Victoria Day and a holiday so traffic may have been in less of a rush on the major thoroughfare they would've had to cross. I went down into the riparian zone to look for her but the water flow was heavy and the vegetation is thickening up. Sad to see her gone. Grateful I was able to provide adequate habitat and hopeful she will come again. When we go for bike rides along the riparian zone we will be on the lookout for the family.
33 days gestation during which she left occasionally for food and the male occasionally circled over low to check on her. Wonderful experience.
