Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/23/2019

Number: 1

Yesterday, 23 May 2019 at 5:45 pm, my daughter and I observed a large, brightly colored monarch patrolling a milkweed patch at the north-west corner of Norwood and Ednor Roads, across from Woodlawn Manor Plantation. We were stuck in traffic following a microburst and flooding, and were able to observe it flying directly in front of our car, within ten feet - clearly a fresh specimen.

We moved to this area in May 2004. This is the first year I've observed a monarch earlier than mid-July. Although I grow a large amount (and variety) of milkweed in my yard, I've only found eggs/caterpillars in three of the past 15 years.

Very excited... and also perplexed by this apparent significant change in pattern, as reported by others, and my own observations.
