I cannot confirm 100%. It sure looked like a monarch to me, but moved so fast in the 10 minutes I followed it, I just could not say definitively. It could possibly have been a viceroy, but not any of the other look-alikes. It had the distinctive black lines of both. I did not see the lower black line of the viceroy, but can't say it wasn't there. The white dots looked more like those of the monarch. I was camped along a riparian area of Wild Horse Creek, between Goblin Valley and the San Rafael Reef in Utah. I spent much of this spring watching the life cycle of monarchs in my Tucson garden. I have very little experience with viceroys.
