Number: 1

12:44 PM, 58 degrees, overcast, rainy, winds 15-20 mph with gusts of 35 mph. Sand Hill Cranes (Fred and Ginger) were walking up the driveway, looking for lunch :) I scattered corn for them, and they brought their baby with them.

They may have lost the other chick, perhaps to a coyote, raccoon or fox (?) Because there,is only one chick with them. This is the second, time we've not seen 2 chicks. When the chicks are this young, mom and dad keep the chicks between them.

Their baby gained a lot of height in a week. Baby is fuzzy, golden, brown.

Sand Hill Cranes are very devoted / dedicated parents--usually keeping their kiddos between them, under and, nearby long, parental, legs. Other than their raspy voices, long legs and a wing span of 7 feet, mom and dad are, for the most part, defenseless with predators.

Unfortunately, it's not a great picture (taken through a window with a cell phone on a rainy day). If you look closely, you will see a golden Sand Hill Crane chick standing between mom and dad :)
