Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/19/2019

Number: 1

I was walking my dog on a asphalt path around the Ellicott Creek Island Park for dogs.

I had just seen what I thought was an adult monarch, but I was not sure.

As I walked the path, I noticed some common milkweed on the edge. The 6 plants were about 2 feet tall. I turned over the leaves and soon found one first instar larva.

The weather in Western NY has been cool and wet since April. This was a rare summer-like day for us - with temperatures in the high 70s.

I was thrilled to find this caterpillar and hope to see one soon on the milkweed on my property.
