The west side of the Wintergreen habitat has been designed, created and maintained with sunny pastures, ditches, thickets, and sandy trails. The north end hosts a meandering creek with additional thickets along its bank. All of these areas are protected from the winds and filled with corridors and pockets--high spots and wet spots, sunshine and shadows, for our wildlife; butterflies, insects, amphibians and birds.
Wildflowers, berries, common milkweed, wild grasses, trees, and sandy trails are interspersed and surrounded by additional thickets of wild strawberries on the ground.
Does hide their cinnamon-colored-fawns in these areas. Birds live, nest, and fill the thickets with bird song. Rabbits thrive in the cover; and can be seen calmly resting in clover and grasses--knowing they are surrounded with opportunities to quickly dart /jump into thick cover in an instant.
Bluebirds and Rosebreasted grosebeaks fly overhead. Crows patrol and protect the area; squawking and chasing hawks. Our Sand Hill Crane pair often stroll / poke along in the wet spots; while wild turkeys dust themselves in the sandy trails.
Butterflies, primarily yellow swallowtails and monarchs were flying / gliding / fluttering, overhead this afternoon.
26 years of dedicated planning, planting, and conservation have become "a magical-protected-spot" for wildlife; birds, frogs, toads, bees, (lots of beloved Bumbles) dragonflies, various insects, and treasured butterflies.
It's a joy, pleasure, honor, to nuture, and be the stewards and guardians of this land.
Wintergreen has become an exceptional example of "build it and they will come." A treasured and protected spot for God's creatures, trees, mosses, wildflowers, plants and grasses.
