Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 06/22/2019

Number: 1

Since May 24th I had several eggs on my common milkweed, then only two larvae. Around June 12th one larva got eaten partially. A wasp perhaps? Then about the 18th saw the second larva looking close to full grown. The 21st of June I saw it looking to attach to spine of common milkweed. In the afternoon it attached to different leaf spine and was motionless from 3pm to 11:17 the 22nd. Worried it hadn't formed a crysalis yet. Next check at 11:49 to find it on the ground being eaten by ants.

Over the last 7 - 8 yrs. there have been as many as 16 - 20 eggs and 10 -12 larva at one time. From all that there was one empty chrysalis seen in spring of2017, one observed chrysalis and its emergence of the butterfly in 2018. So many probably eaten. There are many ants on them and the wasps patrol the leaves. Their toxicity isn't doing a very good job at protecting them. sob!
