Monarch Waystation #271 reports a Female monarch in good shape seen @10:30 am in back yard laying eggs on common and tropical milkweeds. She attempted to lay eggs on swamp milkweeds but their close proximity to the heat pump's fan discouraged her from doing so. She checked out all the stalks present in the back yard and chose young non-blooming natives and blooming tropical milkweeds without any clear species preference. She was observed @10:45 am in the front yard behaving the same except she laid eggs on tropical and purple milkweeds there. Later at 1:20 pm presumably the same lone female was seen nectaring on Zinnias and tropical milkweeds plus laying eggs on tropical and purple milkweeds as I watered some pots. The only other available milkweed species she was not seen to lay eggs on was butterflyweed, Asclepias tuberosa. She did not settle long enough for a photo, was very active flyer and skittish. I did not attempt to examine plants to count eggs.
