White Sweet Clover, Melilotus alba, annual or biennial non native, introduced from Europe and once grown as a hay crop; it escaped and can be found throughout Michigan along roads and fields. "The genus name Melilotus is Greek for honey, referring to its use as a source of nectar for bees." Seeds can lie dormant for decades. -Wildflowers of Michigan Field Guide, by Stan Tekiela

Friday, a solitary Sand Hill Crane appeared. He or she did not recieve a warm welcome from our resident pair, Fred and Ginger. Fred initiated a noisy, wing-flapping, feather flying, kick boxing contest. When the unpleasant interaction was over, Fred and Ginger casually resumed their stroll to the west pasture. The new Sand Hill is enjoying the shade, peace, and quiet north and also east of our home.
