Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 08/11/2019

Number: 19

19 monarchs (and counting from 915 am to 1045... Sunny dry 80 degrees, breezy. Plus two spicebush and one yellow swallowtail and one summer resident hummingbird

We see the monarchs usually one at a time - they nectar on phlox and rose of sharon and then move off to the south. We have a deck which looks north; we see them coming from the cliff across the grass to the rose of sharon or phlox. Some flitting to more than one flower. Then off they go. Once there were four on the bush. Usually just one or two.
On Sunday the 11th when we observed 19 we were seeing them from about 9am til about noon. Then only saw the usual suspects - spicebush - swallowtails- skippers

We are situated right on a bluff on Long Island sound. One of my theories is that they’re heading south over Long Island sound, land on the bluff, spend the night on the cliff and then as they warm up come up and over into our yard and then go south from there.
