Many Monarchs have been visiting the garden today. The Joe Pye Weed is starting to fade and as if in anticipation I saw a Monarch go check-out the New England Aster, which aren't blooming yet. They seem to know the plants one from the other and go check to see if it's ready to bloom. The butterfly show has been incredible today and they're all chasing each other. I don't know if the Monarch thinks that painted lady is a monarch when it chases it around or if there is competition between species for flowers. The only butterfly that doesn't get chased are those little skippers.
