We see the monarchs usually one at a time - they nectar on phlox and rose of sharon and then move off to the south. We have a deck which looks north; we see them coming from the cliff across the grass to the rose of sharon or phlox. Some flitting to more than one flower. Then off they go. Once there were four on the bush. Usually just one or two.
On Monday the 12th only noticed one monarch around 4 pm. We were surprised there were not more.
On Tuesday the 13th when we saw 9 - they appeared (or we noticed them) all day starting before 8 - ending 4pm or so.
We are situated right on a bluff on Long Island sound. One of my theories is that they’re heading south over Long Island sound, land on the bluff, spend the night on the cliff and then as they warm up come up and over into our yard and then go south from there.
