Lots! Some mated pairs, so expect change in numbers. Numbers picked up on the 12th (30) and dropped a bit with rain on the 13th. Then 41 on the 14th and jackpot today!
Editor's note: we have contacted the observer for more details on the timing of this sighting.
Observer's comments: Nectaring on Liatris aspera, mostly. Also zinnias and tithonia.
I count several times a day and report the highest number. I stand in an upstairs window to count in front. Today I went outside and counted from there, as there are a few blind spots, no matter where I stand. Both times/places I estimated at least 50 - in front. Then in back it's easier and there are fewer. The front is a slope, so it's impossible to see everywhere, and when a car drives by fast, they fly up and I see that there are more than I can count. But I do count only what I'm sure is there (no estimating up) until it hits about 40. Then I do a bit of estimating, but try not to overestimate! They hang out here - through at least two big rainstorms!!!!
I've been hosting them for several years now. Last night I noted that they rested in the back yard on mountain ash leaves. They are at top numbers when it's sunny.
