I have two females, one adult and one juvenile, as well as an adult male, frequenting my hummingbird feeder now. The adult male who has been here for the past two seasons was very territorial over the feeder until a couple of weeks ago when I noticed the adult female has been standing watch over it. She sits on an oak tree twig for several minutes at a time guarding against any potential intruders. Because she is so vigilant I cannot be sure if the male is the same one I have seen before or one new to the area. However, the adult female is much more aggressive with him than I have ever seen her before.
I have also observed the juvenile female chasing the male through the limbs of the oak tree on several occasions over the past two days.
This morning another hummer has taken up the adult female's post on the oak twig. From this distance I can only say it is either a male or juvenile female judging by it's size. I cannot see it's colors in the early morning light. However, the imposter did not bother the adult female when she came to feed a moment ago.
