Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/04/2019

Number: 5

1230 hrs in shrubs and a small urban abandoned meadow of red clover, Queen Anne's lace, chicory, and goldenrod. First monarch hanging out at ground level with no apparent direction; perhaps we disturbed while nectaring. Then 3 monarchs abruptly fluttered out of oriental honeysuckle bushes 1-3 m above ground as if either nectaring on fruit (??) or roosting. These four monarchs all in shade from riverbank trees on a windy, cloudy day with light rain shower just moments before. Not a typical time of day for roosting monarch, but perhaps conditions of the moment interrupted normal flight.

Final monarch about 100 M N high above Kennebec River and being blown swiftly N by upstream winds.
