Monarch, Captive-Reared

Date: 09/03/2019

Number: 8

2 released 2-3 weeks ago, one did not form a proper pupa and then apparently rotted, 3 currently as pupae, one currently hanging as J, one discovered moments ago and sequestered in its own mason jar with screen lid.

one of the now released monarchs was discovered as a pupa in a refrigerated head of romaine lettuce of local origin. Although this pupa was expected to be dead, it actually emerged as a fully formed adult. However, pupation extended for almost 3 weeks after the pupa was initially found as if the chilling was not lethal, but did indeed slow or change metamorphic physiology.
