Hummingbird, Other Observations

Date: 09/05/2019

Number: 2

Monarch Waystation #299 reports a sighting of 2 hummingbirds with tail spots visible as they flew around and perched near a trumpet vine growing on a chain-link fence next to the railroad tracks on the Virginia Living Museum southern property boundary. At about 8:30 am they were seen hovering or flitting around the vine and its blossoms and pods. They chased one another, or one flew circles around the other as that one perched. Both flashed tail spots but I was too far away to see other obvious field marks. Did not see any obvious nectaring though blooms were available. They eventually flew away, perhaps a little nervous about being observed. Skies cloudy, very humid, the day before Hurricane Dorian was due to come into the area.
