Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/05/2019

Number: 1

Monarch Waystation #299 reports a faded monarch sighted nectaring about 9:35 am on Ironweed growing in the small Conservation Garden bed facing the Wild Side Cafe. I scared it up from the flower as I passed the bed. It wouldn't land back down so that I could assess gender, but cruised the area around the bed it was found in, then began hovering over and touching all legs on tops of leaves as if to test or ID them. By this behavior I'm suspecting this is a female, perhaps the same faded one seen earlier in the week laying eggs on a common milkweed in a bed growing to the west across the Conservation Garden near the Virginia Garden. Though faded she was a strong flyer. Good luck when Dorian's winds arrives tomorrow!
