Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 08/31/2019

Number: 40

I have seen fewer monarch butterflies this year at my zinnias but have had a LOT of monarch caterpillars, possibly because of a mating pair that arrived in mid-August. I had around 25-30 on one swamp milkweed that I eventually had to move some caterpillars to other milkweed plants (swamp and common) as they decimated the host plant. I had around 10-15 on another swamp milkweed and around 10 on my common milkweed. They have mostly gone off to pupate now--I had around 5-10 or so left this morning as caterpillars that looked big enough to pupate. I also have a few larvae that are younger. I'll list the pupae in a separate sighting. I've also got two that are being captive raised (now in pupae as of today--September 5).
