Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/08/2019

Number: 2

late afternoon in Winslow along Bay Street. One monarch crossed in front of us headed probably 25 deg N of the angle to the sun.

20 minutes later we noticed the same or another monarch at precisely the same location, but this second butterfly landed and hung down at the top of a tall white ash along the railroad tracks.

We pondered that monarchs approach the wide Kennebec River late afternoon and move to roost rather than attempt to fly across a water body of unknown width.

Recently we made an entry nearby on the Winslow side of the Kennebec, but the JN designation was for Waterville. How are locations determined? Winslow is one of many towns and cities in Maine without its own USPS, so this location may also show as Waterville even though truly in Winslow, Kennebec Co., ME

Waterville, ME
