Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/10/2019

Number: 3

I was volunteering at the Virginia Living Museum [AKA Monarch Waystation #299] today, and saw the following: 1) 9 am a male monarch basked and patrolled along the edge of the Virginia Garden near the Fire Road staff gate. 2) 9:25 am a female monarch nectared from the potted Tropical milkweeds growing along the Fire Road behind the glass greenhouse. A few moments later, 3) one Horticulture staff member walked by gently holding a firm monarch chrysalis, rescued from the fence that surrounds the nearby Children's Learning Garden. The pupa will be put in the annual monarch life cycle display case set up in the Main building's Discovery Center indoors, active as long as monarchs are found on the property, commonly deep into October. Welcome to Autumn in southeast VA, where we normally don't see many obvious monarch migrants until after the autumnal equinox.
