Sightings report image

Date: 09/02/2019

Number: 1

My teens and I went to Blacklick Woods Metro Park in Franklin County, Columbus, Ohio to look for monarch butterflies. Inside the nature center, there were 8-9 chrysalises that the naturalist had collected to display. We went to the wild flowers beside the trails, though, and found only 1 monarch caterpillar when looking at both the common milkweed and the sand vine milkweed. We saw only a couple of adult monarchs flying there. Also, there were no milkweed beetles, red milkweed bugs or assassin bugs on the milkweed. We did find a milkweed tussock moth caterpillar, though. We searched from about 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. and were surprised at the lack of insects that we found.
