On Sat. Sept. 7 I was driving south on the 880 through Fremont heading into Milpitas when I saw a large dark "hawk" with pink carrion dangling from it's talons... and as I watched I noted it had a white head! I did a double-take (I was alone and driving), and it occurred to me this looked a lot like the bald eagles I had seen while traveling in the NC and VA mountains. Today I checked if it was even possible that a bald eagle could be in the area, and found this news story about a siting in Walnut Creek (40 miles north). Here's the link to that story: https://abc7news.com/pets-animals/bald-eagle-spotted-in-walnut-creek/5441371/ I think it really WAS a bald eagle after all!
Update from observer: there is a well-known pair of bald eagles nesting in Milpitas! https://patch.com/california/milpitas/milpitas-bald-eagles-photos-day
