Sightings report image

Date: 09/11/2019

Number: 20

I am reporting this a few days late on Saturday 9/14.
I saw about 20 Monarch Butterflies a few days ago here over the course of a few hours in the afternoon. They were all nectaring heavily mostly on various aster and goldenrod species in my field and other nectar plants found closer just outside the house such as small butterfly bushes and other nectar plants such as this blazing star in the picture. Most seemed to kind of stick together in a broad general area in the field but a few branched off onto the other plants.
The temperature that day was rather warm in the low 80s, it was partly cloudy, and there was a moderate wind probably about 15-20 mph. The Monarchs struggled a little when they had to fly into the wind but eventually they got to where they wanted to go.
The Monarchs were probably all traveling in a group going south. They probably chose my location to nectar for the day. The next day they were gone and I haven’t seen a Monarch here since that day.
