There has been a daily presence of monarchs on our home property since early August. At first it was just one or, occasionally, two. In September, the daily sightings have risen to three or four daily, sometimes all at the same time. This is by far the best summer for monarch butterflies in my recent memory.
We have three acres of former hay field that I cut every other year allowing native wildflower species to seed and multiply. Within the plant mix is a substantial amount of milkweed and goldenrod. I will mow this fall but not until late October.
The attached photo of a feeding monarch caterpillar was not taken on my property.
It was observed while I was leading a NH Audubon-sponsored birding event. The milkweed plant is along a road in Orford, NH, the next town north of Lyme. It is instructive that the date was this past Saturday, September 14.
