Monarch Waystation #299 AKA Virginia Living Museum volunteer reports sighting 2 male monarchs regularly nectaring and cruising among the native wildflowers growing in the Virginia Garden and the beds surrounding the Conservation Garden between the Wild Side Cafe and Abbitt Planetarium from 8:30 to 10 am today. A small circular area of the lawn in the Conservation Garden was marked by small orange flags for some reason, and a slight but steady breeze fluttered the flags frequently. One of the male monarchs was observed between 9:35 and 9:45 am hovering behind one flags and it looked like the monarch was attempting to land on and mate with the flag! Once the male's legs directly contacted the orange plastic material it "back pedaled" and flew off. Never saw that happen before, so thought you'd find it of interest.
