We saw very few Monarchs and caterpillars this season, but had over 100 swallowtails & other smaller butterflies. All five of the Monarch casings (those hanging) were all black inside. All apparently died, not sure why. We had plenty of milkweed & other butterfly friendly plants. The Monarchs just weren't here. Our friends had similar experiences in their gardens.
