1030 hrs: following the big highway bridge above Ticonic Falls west from Winslow to Waterville. We think monarchs collect along the eastern shore of the river. The river seems to be a barrier itself, as a reflective deterrent on days of bright sun, or because highways parallel the river and in combination with the river act as some sort of barrier the monarchs do not prefer to cross. Despite the small size of the Kennebec River, this suggests monarchs congregate along even minor aquatic habitats as they do at Point Pelee or the western margin of the Lakes Erie and Ontario
The the butterflies do cross the river at various narrows, other channel constrictions, or major structures as bridges and hydroelectric stations. We imagine the bridges and hydro dams provide better habitat to support monarch migration than other features on the landscape.
Previously we reported monarchs fallen into the water and near drowned at a large local Maine lake only 3 miles N to S and 1 mile E to W.
